Accommodation and Transport
Oceania MathsJam Gathering 2021 will be in the township of Geraldine, about 2 hours drive south from Christchurch. As the Gathering will run over the course of the weekend of 31st July - 1st August (including events on the Saturday evening and Sunday morning), to get the most out of the event it is recommended attendees stay the night in Geraldine.
The preferred accommodation option for the Gathering is Geraldine Top 10 Holiday Park on Hislop Street, just a 5 minute walk from our venue. There are motel-style cabins available with 2-4 beds per cabin. See the Geraldine Top10 Holiday Park website for more info.
Shared Accommodation at Top10
We are providing an option to share accommodation cheaply with other attendees to the gathering.
If you wish to use shared accommodation on Saturday night (July 31st), please select this option on the registration form, and the organisers will book the appropriate number of cabins and beds to accommodate the attendees who select this option. It is expected that attendees will self-organise their sleeping arrangements between cabins upon arriving at the camping ground on Saturday.
Shared accommodation will cost an additional $35 per registrant — please make sure this is paid with your registration fee to the OMG bank account. Important: Bed linen will not be provided, so you must bring your own or optionally hire some from the camp office for an additional $10 on the night.
You are welcome to stay elsewhere in Geraldine also – you will need to book this separately. Other private accommodation options ranging from boutique hotels to homestays to campsites are listed on the GeraldineNZ website. Make sure to check how far away your accommodation is from the town centre so you can still easily attend our main events.
Bus / Carpool from Christchurch
OMG will be providing a transport option from Christchurch. Depending on level of interest, we will charter a bus leaving from Christchurch on Saturday morning at 9am, and returning to Christchurch at 5pm Sunday evening, otherwise we will be using car pooling. Upon registration, please select the bus/carpool from Christchurch option and we will be in touch. If you do require this transport, expect to contribute $20 to help cover fuel and vehicle costs.
If you wish to carpool to OMG from Timaru, please get in touch with our Timaru organiser, Mark Houghton by email to arrange this.
Geraldine is an approximately 2-hour drive south of Christchurch. Take State Highway 1 heading south and turn off onto Scenic route Highway 79 after the Rangitata River. There is free parking available in the township and campground and it’s very easy to get around on foot in Geraldine between the Top 10 Holiday Park and 1066 Medieval Mosaic Building at 10 Wilson Street (<10 min walk).
If you’re coming from outside the South Island, the easiest way to get there is via Christchurch International airport. Arrange to fly in on Friday night or Saturday morning and the Christchurch organisers can pick you up from the airport. If required, some Christchurch MathsJammers are offering overnight billeted accommodation for Friday, and you can travel to Geraldine with the Christchurch cohort (either by car pool or bus as above) leaving at 9am Saturday (July 31st) morning, returning at 5pm Sunday 1st Aug for an evening flight home. You will find an option on the registration form to request pick up from the airport and billeted accommodation in Christchurch.
Unfortunately the organisers were not able to secure a large enough energy source in Geraldine to provide the immense amount of power required to safely teleport MathsJammers to the event. Therefore teleportation will not be available as a transport option to the Oceania MathsJam Gathering this year.
